Hurricane Melissa: The Best Local Journalists to Follow

Over the weekend, Tropical Storm Melissa turned into a Category 5 Hurricane with CNN calling it the “strongest storm on the Planet this year.” Melissa, the 13th named storm of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season, is expected to bring hurricane-force winds and weather conditions across Jamaica, Southeastern Cuba, and the Bahamas starting Monday night and continuing into Tuesday. Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Melissa has already caused severe damage and casualties across Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba, and even Costa Rica.

Local journalists, news stations, and storm chasers have been covering Melissa nonstop; however, mainstream media attention has been limited and not necessarily inclusive of regional and cultural considerations.
