About the Film:
Black Soil Rising: A Family Fight for Land and Justice is a 13-minute short set in Conecuh County, Alabama — the state’s largest oil field and home to the Johnson family’s ancestral land. Led by climate activist and family member Raya Salter, the film introduces a fight to defend Black land that has been passed down since enslavement. Framing land loss as both a story of reparations and climate justice, it exposes the environmental injustice of oil and gas extraction across the Gulf South. Presented by the Energy Justice Law and Policy Center with Support from Movement for Black Lives.
Why this Film? Why Now?
Over 90% of Black farmland has been lost in the last century, a staggering erasure of legacy, wealth, and identity. Today, that loss continues as climate change and environmental racism intersect, hitting Black communities hardest. Across the South,
families are still being stripped of their land through legal manipulation, corporate greed, and systemic neglect.
The mission of Black Soil Rising is to reclaim stolen legacy, confront environmental racism, and restore justice to Black communities. We fight to protect generational land, challenge the toxic industries that threaten our health and heritage, and create real pathways to economic dignity for those who’ve been denied it for far too long.
